A picture may paint a thousand words but text in picture form is difficult to use, especially for a computer. A picture of text from a book or newspaper cannot be edited in a word processor or dropped into a spreadsheet, it must first be converted to text. Hence the need for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) which converts a picture of some text to actual text which can then be manipulated by a word processor.
!STRing stands for Scanned Text Recognition. Taking scanned text images from books, newspapers or magazines and converting them into text that can be edited in a word processor.
!STRing is aimed at the these two sectors of the RISC OS market. It is a freeware OCR program for RISC OS for students and hobbyists and can be download from this web page.
!MakeTplts allows the user to produce template files for use with !STRing. New template files can match different fonts and languages from the default templates provided by !STRing.
