My Wealth of Knowledge

Fonts (iSV/EFF)

I have always had an interest in fonts and design. In fact, I did a talk on fonts as and assessed piece of work during my first year at University.

  1. Using FontTrix Pro
  2. Fonts and Kerning
  3. Converting Fonts
    1. Converting PoScript Fonts
    2. Converting True Type Fonts

Using FontTrix Pro

I recomend that you have selected :

Re-scan font path
Fonts are available as soon as they are made
Note : This only works with the !Fonts directories
Auto-truncate font names
Font names cannot be over 39 characters in length. If selected then this option will tell FontTrix Pro to automatically shorten font names if they are too long.
Export to FontEd when made
I have found that fonts processed by FontEd (and ones that don't crash it) aren't going to cause other applications any problems.
Note : The export to FontEd option does not work if fonts are created through the "Family Window".
Auto save font to disk
This has to be selected when creating multiple fonts
Note : With some font managers you will have to save the fonts to a tempoary !Fonts directory first.

Fonts and Kerning

Note : Fonts saved from FontEd will not include any kerning information. I recomend using FontKern (from iSV) to save the kerning information.

A demo of FontKern is available from iSV. FontEd can be downloaded from Acorn's FTP site

Converting Fonts

PoScript Fonts

<shameless plug>If you want to convert a load of Type 1 fonts to use on your Archimedes then check out my BatchT2F. It works by adding another layer between you and T1ToFont allowing many fonts to be converted with one mouse click </shameless plug>
Note : It requires T1ToFont which is usually supplied with your computer. If you do not have a copy of then it contact your supplier or download it from ftp://ftp.riscos.com/pub/riscos/releases/ro310/support

Latest version 1.28

True Type Fonts

<shameless plug 2>If you want to convert a load of True Type fonts to use on your Archimedes then check out my BatchTTT. It works by adding another layer between you and effTTT allowing many fonts to be converted with one mouse click </shameless plug 2>
Note : It requires effTTT, the True Type Translator from the Electronic Font Foundry. More information about this can be found from http://www.eff.co.uk/effTTT.htm.
